Who took My Outhouse?!

There is so much great history in the City of San Dimas and YES the Martin House has it's outhouse!  So I wanted to share one of my favorite homes in San Dimas, the Martin House. This home is located at the corner of 246 East Bonita Ave San Dimas, Ca 91773. This is now home to the Chamber of Commerce and prior to that the home to the Martin L Torrey family. Martin L. Torrey family history noted here! The Chamber of Commerce contributes in so many ways to our local City of San Dimas. They help small and local business owners build their businesses through various formats, including workshops, networking events, and community events. Looking forward to may more years with the Chamber of Commerce!


So as you tour the City of  San Dimas we have many historical sites. The Martin House is designated Historical Site No. 5. This home was home to the Torrey family and they were one of the many lucky families who had indoor plumbing as so many did not in the early 1900's. Those who didn't had outhouses. So every Halloween while the families had just come in from trick or treating and lay their little ones down to sleep, the pranksters would come out and steal outhouses! Yes they did and they would move them to downtown Bonita (via wagon) and all the families would work together in the morning to retrieve their outhouses, vowing it would never  happen again and well it did!  The Torrey family being one that would be ready to help since their plumbing was safely tucked away in their home. Just imagine running outside to go potty and to your surprise your potty is gone and so is the neighbors, the next neighbors and so on.... So thankful for our lovely in house bathrooms. Whether they are upgraded or not we love our bathrooms and if you know my history you know that is saying a lot! Haha!
